Johnuary [2025] Wrap-Up
A John time was had by all.
The first Johnuary is over. Thankfully it’s gone down pretty well - and thank you as ever for all your engagement. I seriously enjoyed hearing everyone’s opinions on these four films, as well as all the conversations that followed - it’s really one of the best parts of writing for me.
This is a standard wrap-up. You know the drill.
The Hellish Views score rankings are as follows:
The Thing (1982).
In The Mouth of Madness (1994).
Halloween (1978) & Christine (1983).
This is about what I expected, though I got a lot out of each film. The two new watches, despite coming third, are cultural icons and were an important part of my horror education. It was a pleasure to finally see them.
Now for a slightly deeper stats dive.
Most Fun - In The Mouth of Madness, but only just.
Scariest - The Thing (of course).
Vibiest (most unique and memorable) and sickest - The Thing and In The Mouth of Madness.
I love comparing the numbers because they seldom reflect all of my feelings about each film. Words will always be king. Numbers are only for fun.
That said, I like fun. Here’s IMDB’s ranking:
The Thing (1982).
Halloween (1978).
In The Mouth of Madness (1994).
Christine (1983).
The real question is, which one is your favourite? Let us all know in the comments!
And as ever, thanks for reading,
Until next time,
H.E.
Supplemental: Rachael, Noorie - I’ve been wanting to make this reference all month. Tempting to make a TMA post… what do you guys think?

Of course The Thing is my fave, but I love Halloween a lot, too. They're both important films in horror history. And they're both just fucking excellent.
Here's to Johnuary 2026! Any idea of the films you might watch?
The lists gif 😆😆😆. You know I love those lists. The Thing is definitely, hands down, my favorite. It's one of my all-time favorite horror films, so it wasn't really a competition. Benning's transformation scene with the scream and the hands was so unsettling, and you described it really well in the review. I always enjoy your work, but I feel like you really shone in your Johnuary writeups. That grammar feels off... but you get what I mean!
