I had a really fantastic time with Frogs (1972)! It’s more than a little weird, it’s got some great deadpan humour, and there are genuinely hundreds of animals in it.
The credits drew me in immediately. Each snap of our protagonist’s camera freezes on a new creature, with a name or two plastered across the screen, until eventually a FROG appears and the Title Card drops with a shock! It is a long-winded opening but the atmosphere builds hugely as birds and insects murmur and shriek in the background.
Our hero for today is Pickett Smith, freelance photographer, here in Florida taking photos for an ecology magazine. He is documenting pollution in what appears to be the Everglades. Man’s folly - trash and sewage killing off the array of beautiful wildlife we’ve been seeing.
