Oversharing about Beach Bunny
‘If you feel lonely, I could be lonely with you…’
T.W. Eating disorders.
Extremely catchy instrumentals, some beautiful harmonies and vocals, and genuine, personal lyrics that get more relatable as you age.
This is how I would describe Beach Bunny.
I can’t remember when I got introduced to the group, but I know it was pure chance; a light recommendation from an overseas friend. Soon their first full-band single, Sports (2018) would become my morning alarm, waking me up every day from the start of college to graduation. This is indicative of the impact this group had on me from the get-go.
‘If you feel lonely, I could be lonely with you…’
Beach Bunny have since met with a high amount of success after some of their songs went viral. I’m not really on social media, beyond Substack, but I know that some of the more poignant tunes like Prom Queen (2018) have made a serious impact. This particular song tackles disordered eating, and it hits home every time. It’s always been a favourite of mine, virality aside, and for me is as grimly iconic as Marina’s Teen Idol (2012).
‘Dissect my insecurities, I’m a defect surgical project.’
In 2022 they released Emotional Creature - an album that has a very different feel, but still carries everything that makes the music so good. My favourite is Love Song (2022):
‘The planets turn just to hear you talk’
This song is beautiful, if not super exciting, and almost puts me in mind of Fountains of Wayne at points. It’s truly romantic stuff.
I finally saw Beach Bunny in concert in October of last year. Worth saying that in 2025 I was a grown man working a 9-5, but it brought me back nearly a decade through time seeing them perform. It was a remarkable experience, and my first ever concert attended alone. There was even a wall of death! Anyway, the band had released new music earlier that year, and it is this new music that’s driven me to write this post.
Note - they are fucking fantastic live.
Year of the Optimist (2025) is a song I cannot recommend enough. I feel extremely strongly about it, which is unusual for me, as I’m not much of a music buff. However, the fight for optimism is something I feel seriously called to. It is not easy choosing to be optimistic every day, and sometimes it is about survival rather than personal growth. I actually wrote a short poem on the topic, but it’s a bit edgelord so I probably won’t be posting it. Regardless, I feel this is kind of a depression anthem and I think it’s fucking awesome.
‘Even in the great abyss, it’s the Year of the Optimist’
This pairs nicely with Chasm (2025). This also feels like it’s about persevering at all costs. It has a fantastic chorus, a fantastic backing track, and is the ideal length at 2.49.
‘Future is a chasm that I’ll crawl out from’
Clueless (2025) is another fairly poignant song. Aging rapidly, but still feeling like a kid. Struggling with adulthood and nostalgia. There is a desperation in the vocals that eats at you throughout and it makes for an easy relisten.
‘If I got married tomorrow, I’d feel like a teenage wife’
As I know almost nothing about how music is made I’ll stop here. I hope you’ve enjoyed this perhaps overpersonal insight into my life and the music that played around it.
Let me know how you feel about Beach Bunny, and, as ever,
Thanks for reading,
Until next time,
H.E.

I love Beach Bunny so much. My favorite song is Painkiller and the fact they try to get the audience to do the wall of death every time is fun. I haven’t gotten a good charge in though. A lot of the people there don’t know what to do and they get scared so I’m gentle
Also I’ve been to plenty of punk/ metal shows and this is the only band I’ve seen do it 😂I think they get away with it bc their audience doesn’t take it too far and they play bigger venues.
I also really like Pixie Cut and Oxygen. The first time I saw them live you could hear Lili’s accent (kinda nasally in a good way, Chicago obviously) which I liked but she sounded more like the albums the second time.
My gf was mad when I brought her bc she thought the name would be ironic but the whole point is it doesn’t have to be
Cool to see you writing about music now! It's interesting to see how you describe Beach Bunny's music. Would be interested to see more posts about music :)
