Just The Points #7 - Society (1989)
Ever wanted to freak out for a little while?
Total Score: 20/23.
I really don’t know how to start this review off. This is The What The Fuck film. It’s brilliantly weird, throwing you straight into a taboo-filled satirical nightmare. By the forty minute mark you’re completely caught in the bizarre plot, terrified despite almost nothing having happened. Almost everything is unnerving. The effects, initially used sparingly, are powerfully creepy and make your skin crawl.
Our protagonist seems half-crazy before the film even begins. At its grimmest Society feels Lynchian - like Blue Velvet (1986) or Twin Peaks (1990). The director, Brian Yuzna, produced such classics as Re-Animator (1985), so you know you’re in for a blast before it even begins. Even the opening credits are a scene straight from the abyss - writhing, sucking, sliminess. A note, actually - the sound design is just horrifyingly good throughout, and might be the most memorable element of the film. That said, the effects go from fairly creepy to unbelievably disturbing as the time ticks closer to the end - all I’ll say is Blanchard - IYKYK.
Overall, this film was genuinely scary, and I’m very glad I watched it. What a mad, mad movie. Though the ending may be a little weak, the array of standout scenes, blood-curdling performances and spectacularly horrid special effects make this a body-horror classic.
As ever, thanks for reading,
Until next time,
H.E.

This is one I have not seen yet.
This looks like madness. Gotta check it out! (My husband will probably be like wtf? — I tend to like weirder horror than him. I watched Crimes of the Future and nearly the whole film he would ask me what the heck I was watching 😂)
