Evil Dead - Wrap-Up
At long last, this project is complete.
Finally, we slogged through the slime and viscera and got through every single Evil Dead film.
We even investigated the TV show! A truly groovy and exquisitely fun time. I’m not thrilled that my last Wrap-Up was in February, but hey, sometimes life gets busy!
Regardless of all that, at last, we can put this miniseries to rest (Until Burn comes out and I have to rev up the chainsaw and oil the boomstick once more). Let’s do a speedy ranking.
On points alone:
Evil Dead - 20/23.
Evil Dead 2 - 18/23.
Evil Dead (2013) - 16/23.
Army of Darkness - 13/23.
Evil Dead Rise - 10/23.
What interests me is how well each film does on Vibes. It might be my most confusing category, so here’s a quote from my explanatory post:
“My go-to example for a film that scores high on vibes is Suspiria (1977). Argento’s movie knows what it is going for - it is utterly unique and relentlessly weird. Two modern masters of vibes might be Robert Eggers and Ari Aster. Often you come away from their films emotionally and sensorily flashbanged. Many of their pictures have a clear aesthetic and feel in mind.”
Every film in this series except Rise smashed it in this area. The first two and the remake got a perfect score, AOD got ⅘ (which I’m already considering bumping up). Our lowest Vibe rating was 3 - which means it was still interesting and unique. What does this tell us?
THAT WHEN IT COMES TO DEADITES, YOU KNOW YOU’RE IN FOR A ROLLERCOASTER.
That, and that Sam Raimi-style visuals are an absolute treat.
The other unsurprisingly consistent high-scoring category was Fun. Evil Dead is fucking fun. It is a great time watching shit hit the fan, and in this case the shit is a thousand litres of gore and goop. I knew what I was in for and pretty much every movie delivered.
Anyway, I’ll keep this post brief.
Thank you all so much for reading and commenting. I really put a lot into this project, and despite the fact it overran hugely, I had a fantastic time. It was also personally important to me to champion Bruce Campbell’s talent - now more than ever. So yeah, feeling very grateful, and I hope you all had as much fun as I did. I reckon you’ll like what I got planned for my next miniseries.
As ever, thanks for reading (yes, again),
Until next time,
H.E.

YESSSS!! I'm so happy you loved these films, and the show! And celebrating Bruce Campbell is always the right thing to do, but definitely now more than ever.
I thoroughly enjoyed your series, Harry! Hail to the King, baby!!
Do you plan on seeing Evil Dead Burn when it comes out this year?
