The Adventures of A Man Who (Mostly) Hates Social Media

It is surprisingly unpleasant thinking about the subscription system on here.

It’s bizarre, in that I myself have paid for Patreon and similar subscriptions in the past, and not thought twice about it. Hell, I’m considering paying for some stuff on here, too, and that doesn’t bother me either - I’m actually quite excited.

But there is, undeniably, a horrid feeling when it comes to one’s own account. Marketing yourself feels grimy, especially in a community that puts out so much awesome stuff for free (though, I can definitely think of a good number of names I’d definitely pay for their articles, if they ever went that direction).

But Harry, I hear you cry, you have to believe in yourself, you gotta put yourself out there! And that’s true. I mean, if I had a book or something out, I probably would do. I mean I literally have paywalled fiction out there somewhere (the phrase is vomit-inducing). The thing is, these last weeks or so I have been feeling like it is a little silly not to test the Substack waters.

So, with that said:

Frankly, I expect nothing to come of this, and that’s fine - having no schedule for posting is chill, and I get a lot out of sharing my stuff with you all.

But you never know!

Rest assured, any new Just the Points, standard Reviews and Monthly Miniseries’ will remain free reading, as will all my existing stuff. I’m not really here on a business mission, and I absolutely love interacting with everyone. Just feels worth a try, you know?

Anyway, now I’m going to shrivel away into a shameful dust, and hopefully everyone will forget this ever happened!
